How can you love God with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength when you do not see Him?

Today, St. Mark’s Gospel again reminds us of the crux of our faith: love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and strength; love your neighbor as yourself. Very simply put, if we follow these precepts to the best of our ability, it is only then that the Holy Spirit will bring us to the point where we discern what is good and of God.

Love the Lord and love one another! What a tall order for any Christian to do. Where does one start showing love for God? How can you love God with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength when you do not see Him? That is why one should see God in one’s neighbor. This is where God manifests Himself to everyone.

We have to look at our neighbor with compassion, with understanding, and with forgiveness that comes from the heart. This is only possible when we have God’s presence in our life. For when we have His presence, we feel God’s love in our hearts, and then we learn to teach ourselves to love others.

Finally, it is important to note that Jesus places love of God in the first position of importance. It is only when God occupies first place in our lives that we can love others and ourselves in the way God designed. This is the challenge for all Christians.
