He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

Did you hear what Jesus said? God is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living! He is the God of here and now. He is the God of the present moment. He is the God of all that we have to embrace.

What does this Gospel have to do with the kind of life we live? We come to a point, where our lives can be lived with a certain amount of hope, a certain amount of daring, a certain amount of adventure, a certain amount of confidence. These are qualities in our lives because we know there is something beyond our lives. There is a paradox to our living on this earth. We can have true qualities, because we know that the things that are of value in this life are not things of value in the life hereafter.
If one were to judge by what many Christians seem to embrace, God’s only concern for us would be shepherding us into the after world. Yes, God does that and God saves us. But God is also concerned about our lives today–who we are and what we do and what happens to us.

Our happiness in God is not only a thing of the afterlife, which shall be eternal, but it starts here and now. This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Today, here, now. The Lord loves us unto eternity, but He also loves us here and now. Eternity will embrace us, but it can wait as we experience day to day the joys of God’s love and concern for us. Indeed eternity begins for us when we allow ourselves to experience the God of the living!
