God loves a cheerful giver!

“God loves a cheerful giver.” –2 Corinthians 9:7

The only way to be a cheerful giver of everything is to be in love with Jesus. Then we will consider it a privilege to give our all to Him. We will find “more happiness in giving than receiving”. Because of our love for Jesus, we will “come to rate all as loss”, and gladly give everything to Him so He may be our Wealth and we may be in Him.

While Paul is definitely not trying to manipulate anyone into giving beyond their means, he is definitely trying to provoke the Corinthians to give according to their means. Some people have more which means they can give more and some have less and can give less. We can invoke the principle of equality here, that those who give little and those who give much can balance out the offering to make it a decent one. And, lest you think I’m only talking about money, let me hasten to say that what we have to offer God is a lot more than money.  We have time and talent and energy and the creative gift of imagination.

When the Lord calls us to give, He doesn’t mean for us to give something, but to give everything. We are to give as He gives, “good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over” (Lk 6:38). The Father gave His Son; the Son gave His life; the Spirit gave His gifts.  We certainly can never out-give God, but we can do the best we can by giving our all. We can give all we have “to live on”. We can give our lives and our deaths to the Lord. The Lord not only calls us to give everything, but also to do it cheerfully. We find this a difficult combination, because most of us don’t want to give everything. Even if we do give our all, we may not feel too happy about it.
